c. 2600 – 1900 BCE
The earliest urban architecture in the subcontinent: standardised fired-brick cities laid out on a grid, with covered drainage that wasn't matched in the region for millennia. Notably, no confirmed monumental palace or temple has been identified — the emphasis was civic and domestic.

The South Indian Hindu temple tradition, matured under the Pallava, Chola and Vijayanagara dynasties. Its signature move is inverting the usual emphasis: the tallest tower stands over the entrance gateway, not the sanctum.
